Aims of the Applied Econometrics Association

founded in 1974
The AEA was founded by a group of four economists interested in applied econometrics. It was incorporated in 1977 by Henri Guitton, Member of the "Institut de France", professor of economics at the University of Paris 2, Christian Labrousse, professor of economics at the University of Paris 2, Henri Serbat, economic engineer at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry at Paris, and Raymond Courbis, professor of economics at the University of Paris 10.

to promote econometric applications
The purpose of the AEA is the encouragement and development of econometric applications. As stated in its charter, econometrics is defined as a number of « scientific processes which aim at identifying, explaining and forecasting economic phenomena, using formalised tools to produce, measure, structure and model the information »

which covers a broad field of investigations
The AEA has allowed the development of a particular open-minded scientific spirit which has direct consequences on its activities and research areas. Relevant topics cover employment, finance, health, sector-based analysis, macro- and micro-economics, management. It aims at bringing its proposals before public and governmental bodies, firms, teaching and professional training institutions..

and calls upon multi-field competences.
The association has attracted an increasing number of members who work together.
Any person with an interest in econometrics is eligible for membership: general economists, econometricians, mathematicians, managers, demographers and specialists of health and employment policies. It allows of have networking opportunities with colleagues in different fields such as regional planning, energy and commodity markets, environmental problems, biotechnologies, tourism, but also education, innovation, brands, patents, and art.

The AEA is known in Europe and worldwide
As a dynamic association, during 25 uninterrupted years of action and exchange of scientific knowledge, the AEA has now a consolidated European and international network.

Organisation and structure of AEA
Full members
The association relies upon its members, which are in fact its very backbone.
Annually, more than 500 members share their collective expertise, their experiments, their vision of contemporary economic phenomena.
Administration, management are carried out by the AEA council, responsible for thematic scientific working groups and correspondents.

AEA council
The council deals with issues concerning the general policy of the association, which it considers necessary for furthering its aims. It is in particular responsible for the adequacy of the choices of topics and methods to the AEA aims. It is a guarantee of professionalism and scientific value of activities, conferences and publications.
Past presidents take an active part in AEA decisions: Robert Guesnerie, professor at the “Collège de France”, and Jean H. P. Paelinck, professor emeritus of the Erasmus University of Rotterdam.

Thematic Scientific Working Groups
Six thematic scientific working groups are attached to the association: Finance, Employment, Health, Regional Problems, Commodity Markets, International Economic Issues. The members in charge of each thematic scientific working group are responsible for the choice of relevant conference topics.

Correspondents
Correspondents facilitate the diffusion of AEA current research actions throughout their region or country.
They are about 50, mainly representative important French universities, but also of private and public research centres.
About 20 countries are moreover represented in the association. Each European country has a correspondent, and on each continent AEA has a person in charge.

Activities
AEA aims at stimulating research and promoting personal contacts through three types of activities.
Communication and exchange...
The AEA stimulates communication and exchange between scholars from different parts of the world, interested in different fields of applied econometrics.

Organisation of frequent meetings, seminars, brainstormings and conferences
About 100 conferences, treating of relevant and timely major economic problems, have been organised by the AEA, each gathering about 100 participants. Those two-day conferences include contributed paper and poster sessions.

Publications and books...
...Publications of an international character on problems of current relevance (selected proceedings of conferences, articles in specialised journals, special books) are also permanently realised.
